Royal Express: Hold and Win Slot Bonus Features
Playson has gone for a very retro look and feel here, complete with a golden grid and fruit symbols. The grid is set beneath a classic steam train, and you play across three rows and three reels, offering five paylines. To put together winning combinations, you’ll need three identical symbols that match any of the available paylines.
The game features a mix of both low and high payout symbols, including the following:
- Cherries: The lowest paying of the lot, the cherry symbols award you wins of 1x your stake.
- Plums, Oranges and Lemons: The medium level fruit in the game gets you better wins of 4x your bet.
- Watermelons and Grapes: The best paying fruit symbols award prizes of 16x your stake.
- Gold Bar: The first of the high payout symbols, gold bars get you wins worth 20x your bet.
- Gold Bells: These tokens award you prizes of 30x your stake.
- 777: The highest paying symbols in the game, 777 tokens get you wins worth 50x your bet. They are also the online slot’s wild symbols, but more on that below.
This covers Royal Express: Hold and Win’s basic layout and payout symbols, but the game gets far more engaging once we take a closer look at its special features.
Wilds
As I mentioned earlier, the 777 symbols serve as the online slot’s wild symbols. This means that they substitute for any missing symbols that could form a winning payline. Their most useful position is on the middle reel, where they can easily connect symbols set on the other two reels.
While they can be invaluable during the base game spins, they do not feature at all during the bonus game.
Scatter Symbol
There are two scatter or bonus symbols in Royal Express: Hold and Win. The first is the bonus symbol, which can land on reels one and three, showing up as a gold coin with a crown at its centre. It carries instant cash prizes but is only useful when landing in conjunction with the boost symbol on the middle reel, triggering the game’s bonus mode.
Whenever it hits, the boost symbol picks up and awards the instant cash prizes carried by the bonus symbols. Without it, the instant cash prizes are lost completely. It is constantly present during the hold and win bonus, helping you build as big a prize as possible.
Pile of Gold
If you land a boost symbol on its own in the base game, the game can randomly activate the Pile of Gold feature. This adds more bonus and boost symbols to the reels, enough to activate the hold and win bonus.
Hold and Win Bonus
Once you access the bonus mode, all the reels are cleared and a boost symbol is added to the centre tile on the middle reel. You get three respins, during which you can land bonus symbols, jackpot symbols or blanks. If you land a bonus or jackpot symbol, you reset the respin counter back to three, but if you run out of respins, the bonus ends.
While the bonus symbols give you smaller payouts, the jackpot symbols can get you the following rewards:
- Mini: 25x win
- Minor: 50x win
- Major: 150x win
- Grand: 1,000x win
You can also get Royal Express multipliers landing on the grid. These multipliers highlight a particular tile on the grid with multipliers worth up to 3x. You can get several of these on the same tile, which will multiply against each other to give you a bigger boost. They are then applied to any bonus symbols that land on their respective tile.
In available regions, the game also has a bonus buy option, which takes you straight to the hold and win bonus but costs you 75x your bet.
RTP & Volatility of Royal Express: Hold and Win Slot
Despite its medium to high level of volatility, Royal Express: Hold and Win is targeted at a hardcore audience. It has an RTP of 95.6%, which, paired with that level of volatility, leads to a very challenging time on the reels. It can take a long while for meaningful wins and special features to trigger.
While that can work incredibly well with hardcore slots that offer big rewards, Royal Express: Hold and Win drops the ball with its maximum win cap. The biggest win you can score here comes through the grand jackpot prize, awarding you 1,000x your stake. It’s not a small reward, mind you, but it’s a far cry from the huge prize pots that tend to accompany more challenging slots.
Bet levels are capped at £100, so you can score wins worth up to £100,000, but this will only be viable for those of you with big gambling budgets. Although it isn’t a dealbreaker, it does mean that if you have a smaller gaming budget to work with, your maximum wins will be relatively limited.
Royal Express: Hold and Win Slot on Mobile
I tested out Royal Express: Hold and Win on my Android phone using a Chrome browser and was quite impressed with the game’s mobile performance. I was able to seamlessly switch between landscape and portrait mode, and while the former is essentially identical to the desktop version, the latter turned out to be my preferred way of playing on the go.
The portrait mode feels like the right way to play the game. It has an adapted interface that is better suited to playing on the go and a better overall design that loses the awkward black bars on the side of the screen that come with the landscape and desktop iterations. Otherwise, the features and math model remain identical regardless of how you choose to play.
The game is also available on iOS devices, and you can play using any modern mobile browser, including Firefox, Safari and Opera.
-
Instant cash prizes can be claimed in the base game.
-
Wild symbols are the highest paying tokens in the game.
-
Excellent mobile compatibility.
-
High payouts on base game symbols.
-
No original mechanics or features.
-
Low maximum win cap considering the game’s math model.
Royal Express: Hold and Win FAQs
That covers everything from my trip aboard the Royal Express: Hold and Win train, but if you have more questions, feel free to send over a message using the contact form. I’ll get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.
You can also check out the following frequently asked questions for more information.
Does Royal Express: Hold and Win have progressive jackpot prizes?
No, all of the jackpots in Royal Express: Hold and Win are fixed and do not feature on any progressive jackpot networks.
Can I win jackpot prizes from the base game?
No, the jackpot prizes are strictly locked behind the bonus mode and can only land during the game’s hold and win bonus.
How many respins can I get during the bonus rounds?
There is theoretically no limit to the number of respins you can get during the bonus rounds. Whenever you land a symbol on the reels, it resets the respin counter and gets absorbed by the boost symbol, allowing you to land more bonus symbols in the following rounds. However, the bonus ends if you run out of respins.
Does Royal Express: Hold and Win feature an ante bet option?
No, there is no ante bet option in Royal Express: Hold and Win, so the chances of landing scatter symbols cannot be enhanced. But the Pile of Gold feature can be randomly activated during the base game spins to help you get to the bonus rounds.
