The setting this time around is 80s-themed, with some very recognisable throwbacks, including a boat that bears a strong resemblance to the Delorean from Back to the Future. Not much has changed in terms of design, though, just the slightly different, themed lick of paint that we’ve come to expect from new entries in the series.
You play across the usual five reels and three rows, with 10 paylines that can deliver wins as long as you have a minimum of three identical symbols landing on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. The more identical symbols you have, the better the payout you’ll receive.
There’s a great mix of both low and high payout symbols in the game, including:
- Royal Card Symbols: The lowest paying symbols in the game, these tokens can get you wins ranging from 0.20x to 10x your stake.
- Fish Symbols: The first of the mid-table symbols in the online slot, fish symbols can get you wins from 1x to 20x your stake. However, they also carry instant cash prizes that can be claimed by wild symbols in free spins.
- Lure Box and 80s Laser Gun: Higher up the ladder, we get the lure box and laser gun with prizes from 2x to 50x your bet.
- Retro Dragonfly: The dragonfly has initial prizes starting from 3x your bet and maxing out at 100x your stake.
- Boat Symbol: The highest paying symbol in the game, the boat symbol offers wins for two identical symbols too, with prizes ranging from 0.50x your bet to 200x your stake.
As with all Pragmatic Play games, you also get the opportunity to activate turbo mode, which speeds up the pace of each spin, making longer play sessions far more enjoyable. You also get an autoplay function with up to 1,000 consecutive rounds spinning automatically.
Wilds
Wild symbols are crucial to scoring big wins in Big Bass Reel Repeat. However, these tokens only land during the free spins bonus and aren’t present at all during the base game spins. This time around, the series’ iconic fisherman mascot looks more like Doc Emmet Brown, without the messy white hair.
Wilds step in for any missing pay symbol that could form a winning combination, and they can also combine with existing wins, increasing their symbol count to boost their rewards. They have no payout value of their own, however, so you’ll be relying on them combining with other symbols to score wins.
Whenever these tokens land in conjunction with fish symbols, they absorb and reward all of the fish symbols’ cash prizes. If you land a wild symbol and no fish symbols, there’s a chance of the game randomly adding fish symbols to the reels, helping you to score more prizes. Wilds are also essential to progressing the bonus trail, but more on that below.
Scatter Symbol
Scatter symbols are needed to access the free spins bonus, and you’ll need a minimum of three to access the bonus rounds. Landing three, four or five scatter symbols gets you 10, 15 or 20 initial free spins, respectively.
If you land two scatter symbols in a single round, the game will make these tokens sticky, activating a respin in an effort to land a third scatter. The two sticky scatters then move one position down and reactivate another respin. The process carries on until the scatter symbols make their way off the grid or you land a third scatter symbol.
Scatter symbols have no payout value, and they don’t land during the free spins bonus, with the bonus trail replacing them for additional free spins.
Free Spins
While you can still score decent wins in the base game through regular payouts, the game’s true potential is unlocked once you access the free spins bonus. Upon unlocking the free spins bonus, you get to choose from a set of cards that can lead to bonus boosts, including extra fish symbols, doubled win multipliers or fewer wilds required for the bonus trail. You can also score a mega card that contains all of the above, or land a blank card with no boosts at all.
During the free spins rounds, wild symbols are automatically collected by the bonus trail and for every four you collect, you get 10 additional free spins as well as a win multiplier upgrade of 2x, 3x or 10x your win. These multipliers are only applied to wins that include wild symbols. You can add a total of 30 additional free spins, and the bonus ends once you run out of bonus spins.
The game also gives you the option of using an ante bet and a bonus buy boost. The ante bet options cost 1.50x, 1.60x or 2.50x your bet, giving you a higher chance of landing scatters, a chance to repeat and a higher chance of landing scatters and repeat, respectively. The bonus buy option costs 100x, 160x or 1,250x your bet, offering direct access to free spins, free spins + repeat chance or mega free spins complete with all reel modifiers, respectively.
The video slot’s math model maintains the same setup as the latest releases in the series, with a high level of volatility and several RTP ranges including 96.51%, 95.52% and 94.52%. I suggest sticking to the 96.51% iteration of the game, as this gives you the best overall experience.
You can choose from a variety of bet levels, starting from £0.10 and capping at £250. This gives you a wide range to choose from, fitting into different budget levels and helping you to make the most out of your bankroll. Wins are capped at 5,000x your stake, with the free spins win multipliers playing a big part in helping you close in on that figure.
I had to test out Big Bass Reel Repeat on mobile, too, and I was impressed with how the game ran on my Android phone. I played through a Chrome browser and was able to instantly shift between portrait and landscape modes.
There are some minor differences between the two, and I recommend the portrait mode when playing on phones. But other than these small variations in interface, the game remains largely the same across all platforms, and you can also play Big Bass Reel Repeat on iOS devices and browsers like Safari, Opera and Firefox.
-
5,000x maximum win.
-

-
High payout symbols.
-
Fun, silly theme.
-
Repeat function is hidden behind an ante bet and bonus buy paywall.
-
Only one chance to claim reel modifiers before free spins.
-
Lazy, half-baked additions to the formula.
