The project introduces a structured framework driven by data analysis to evaluate key areas, including self-exclusion protocols, player assistance tools, employee training methods and marketing strategies.
The initiative seeks to promote standards that go beyond regulatory compliance by scrutinising these areas through independent audits.
The roll-out was announced on 2nd September at ROGA’s headquarters in McLean, Virginia.
It was emphasised by ROGA Executive Director, Dr. Jennifer Shatley, that the programme is founded on the conviction that a sustainable online gaming industry can be achieved through objective assessment and evidence-based best practices.
“Our members are committed to long-term progress, and with RGC’s support, this programme will serve as a clear signal that the industry is backing that commitment with actions that will allow players to make informed decisions about the platforms they use.”
With over 40 years experience in player protection and prevention programming, RGC also has a lot to bring to the table. Its RG Check accreditation, implemented at both online and brick-and-mortar casinos, will serve as a foundational guide for the new certification.
RGC’s CEO, Sarah McCarthy, described the collaboration as a move towards a “more transparent, accountable, and player-focused industry,” built on established, data-driven standards.
ROGA, representing approximately 90% of the legal US sports betting market by handle, views this certification as an effort toward strengthening ongoing commitments to responsible gaming beyond state and provincial mandates.
The thorough analysis is designed to encourage operators to establish robust safeguarding policies and responsible gambling tools for their players.
ROGA, the overarching organisation representing bet365, BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel, began developing a certification process this year by requesting proposals. This followed a similar request in late 2024 for a technology provider to support its data-clearinghouse initiative. That work has now led to a formal collaboration with RGC to design the programme’s architecture.
“We are proud to work with ROGA in setting a new benchmark for responsible gambling in the online space. The new certification programme will build on years of evidence-based work and experience building RG Check as a trusted standard. By working together, we are creating a more transparent, accountable, and player-focused industry.” McCarthy added.
This marks a significant industry shift, transforming responsible gaming from a mere regulatory obligation into an independently verified, performance-based certification. It reinforces ROGA’s broader objective: to integrate player protection with innovative operator strategies through enhanced transparency and ongoing improvement.
