The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) will be launching a new supervisory engagement strategy this year. They have a renewed focus on compliance as well as player protection and the integrity of different forms of betting.

The new approach will enhance the way the MGA assess risk and risk-based behaviours and provide a more transparent overall experience for those playing at casinos regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority. This is one of the biggest such organisations in the world.

The regulator explained that: “This approach aligns with the MGA’s broader strategy to bolster the resilience of the online gaming sector, safeguard player interests, and foster greater stakeholder confidence in a sustainable and well-regulated industry.”

The strategy will prioritise the external compliance audits as well as engagements with customers to engage key risks.

The authority is working hard on areas like information technology as well as some of the problem gambling safeguarding methods such as self-exclusion and problem gambling detection.

The sports betting integrity will also be a big part of the equation as the MGA will try to improve its reporting of suspicious betting activities. The MGA will now conduct full-scope audits which are through approved audit service providers in order to ensure that casinos are sticking to their responsibilities. The audits are in place to ensure that things like problem gambling and money laundering are avoided wherever possible.

Another part of the strategy MGA is utilising in 2025 will involve targeted thematic reviews of certain licensees and their operations. These will check on things like the incident response of casinos licensed with the organisation as well as things like safeguarding player data.

A Governance Assurance review will also look at the key personnel working on internal auditing and compliance to ensure that these areas are being covered in detail, with self-exclusion being one of the key factors. There are hundreds of MGA-licensed casinos that will now have to prepare for stricter controls.
